Title of Project: Stagnation and Response: New Argentine Cinema in the Era of Neoliberalism

Inspiration Behind the Project:
This paper examines the relationship between the “New Argentine Cinema” and the neoliberal economic policies of 1990s Argentina, with a focus on films directed by Lucrecia Martel, Pablo Trapero, and Diego Lerman. The paper argues that the films explore the feeling of psychological stagnation that stems from a socioeconomic realm controlled by foreign or distant powerful actors. The associated photography project is an examination of the feeling of psychological stagnation in the United States.
